"MILLENNIUM
SURGEONS DAY" was celebrated on 30th June at Hotel

Editorial
Medical
Profession has seen significant changes during the last
few decades, thanks to the tremendous advances made in science
and technology. These changes along with the reforms and
economic liberalization have made an impact on the delivery
of healthcare in our country. However, the medical education
itself has remained unchanged over the years. It was this
much-needed reform in medical education that prompted our
president of A.S.I., Dr. K.S. Shekar to embark on organizing
a national debate. It is time that present day teachers
adapt themselves to the changing needs of our society. They
should produce a graduate who is capable of delivering the
medical care in an efficient way whether he is in the city
or in a rural setup, whether working in an institution or
in private nursing home. Apart from learning the basics
of surgery and possessing essential knowledge and necessary
skills, he should also have some understanding on subjects
like medical ethics, computers, surgical audit, communication,
health insurance, and financial management. A detailed report
on the seminar, which was conducted recently , is given
by Dr. Laxman. Dr. Shekar and his team which included our
own president Dr. Gopinath and Dr. Srinivas of Rajiv Gandhi
University has done an excellent hob by arranging this meeting
and we sincerely hope that the various professional bodies
like Medical Council of Indian and Various health universities
will take note of the recommendations made by the group
of experts who deliberated for two days at Bangalore.
