The
Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) has decided to
hold National Surgical Quiz Competition for Postgraduate
Students in Surgery, each year starting December 2000.
This quiz will be held during the annual ASI Conference.
Each stet is requested to send a representative team to
Delhi. After a preliminary screening round of written
answers, five to six teams will be selected to take part
in the Final Round. This round will be a Multimedia presentation
with individual team questions, rapid fire questions and
Buzzer round questions. The winning team will be handsomely
rewarded.
Karnataka
state selections were held at Bangalore on 18th October
2000. The State was initially divided into 3 zones. Zonal
selection was held through quiz competitions held during
September at Bangalore, Mangalore and Hubli. Two teams
from each zone were selected to participate in the State
Finals. The selected teams were as follows:
| Bangalore
Zone |
Bangalore
Medical College St. Martha's Hospital |
| Hubli
Zone |
J
N Medical College, Belgaum Karnatak Medical College,
Hubli |
| Mangalore

The
quiz was a multimedia presentation complemented by Dr.
Rajan, the Quiz Master. The quiz was designed and executed
by Dr. Lakshman. Many Surgeons of Bangalore provided material
for the quiz. Dr. S S Sastry and Dr. Anuradha did the
complicated scoring. IDN sponsored the event.
Questions
asked in the quiz covered surgical trivia, history of
surgery, basic sciences, general surgery and specialty
surgery. The Quiz consisted of Individual team questions,
a Rapid fire round wherein each team got 60 seconds to
answer as many short questions as they could, and a buzzer
round where the team pressing the buzzer first had the
chance to answer the question put up. The competition
was keenly fought. Negative marking made it more interesting,
in that the team being selective in answering, was rewarded.
In
a close finish, the team from Bangalore Medical College
represented by Dr. Pranav and Dr. Ramesh won the contest
and was selected to represent Karnataka at the National
Level.
